Caspar wolf reported that the sperm and ovum unite to form the egg. Gregor mendel is an important person ; he was a monk in austria. Spent a lot of time breeding plants. He was interested in characteristics like the height of the plant. He inferred that inherited characteristics are produced by genes which are transmitted unchanged from generation to generation. He said there are a pair of genes for a characteristic. One member of the pair is inherited from each parent. He said members of gene may differ in their effects ; sometimes one may dominate the other. Genes are components of larger bodies called chromosomes. Normal human cells contain 2 sets of 23 chromosomes. 1 member of each pair come from mother and 1 from father. Ovum + sperm ; involved in reproduction. They have only one 23 individual chromosome. Exchange of genetic material between homologous chromosomes at points where they cross-over during lining up.
