Chromosomes 13,18 and 21 as well as sex chromosomes. One of the best known autosome disorders. Also known as trisomy 21 ; involves the 21st chromosome pair ; an extra chromosome on the 21st pair. Failure of chromosomes to separate in the ovum. In down syndrome, there"s an intellectual impairment. They tend to be cheerful and affectionate. The incidence is related to the mothers age. Born with a single x chromosome ; x0 ; ovum was probably fertilized by an abnormal sperm. They don"t produce estrogen and they remain underdeveloped. If estrogen is developed at puberty, they"ll develop secondary characteristics only. Use language to reason - verbal intelligence ; philosophers. They have their verbal intelligence intact but they show a de cit in their spatial intelligence. This is a male with an extra x chromosome. Once puberty hits, they begin to develop female secondary characteristics ; they get breasts ; hips widen ; voice remains soft.
