Fitting into a tight skirt: stereotypes: stereotypes. A stereotype is what people think how others think. It refers to how people look, think, and behave, and how these are linked to certain groups. Can be modi ed over time (change) and can also be reinforced. A schema guides people as they experience the world around them. Schemas are in the mind and sometimes are beliefs that may not be shared by many others. Useful, allows us to take shortcuts when placing individuals in categories. Schemas contribute to stereotypes as it makes if dif cult to retain new information, that doesn"t t and therefore stay within the stereotype. Some schemas are held by many (group stereotype and schemas) Gender stereotypes: stereotypes regarding men and women which set standards and expectations, commonly held beliefs. Ie. women are emotional, most bosses are men. These are dif cult to change and modify, learnt at a young age.
