PSY 3121 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Bsc Young Boys, School, Microsoft Powertoys
Document Summary
Children are expected to understand gender roles early on. Their world is shaped by the interactions around them, tv, etc. Young children become part of the gender system (can be displayed outwards or inwards) Social learning theory: learning how to put yourself in those social roles. Discusses the ways in which we learn about what it is to mean to be a boy or a girl, the behaviours of a man vs. a woman. Teaches us that these behaviours that we are taught as children are reinforced by repetition, causing them to be learned. Applies to behaviours that are typically appropriate for boys and girls: ex. Girls are expected to play quietly and without mess, boys are expected to play loudly and roughly. Reinforced by smiling when a girl is playing quietly and when a boy is playing loud/roughly. Reinforced the idea that girls have to play quiet but boys do not.
