Similar to most other issues in psychology, a rm de nition of what violence against women entails is dif cult to de ne. Laws take a long time to change. Johnson, 1995: some include violence against women psychologically, emotionally, nancially, sexual, sexual assault and its legal de nition. The un de nes violence against women as: any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual, or psychological harm or suffering to women. Includes threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty (ex. preventing them from talking to others), whether occurring in public or in private life. 29% of women experienced violence in a marriage or cohabitation. 19% had experienced violence with an ex-partner, while they were separated. Rule of thumb: in the 1800s, you could beat your wife with something that was no larger than the width of your thumb. Domestic violence is called the hidden problem.
