19th century: women were seen as inferior both intellectually and morally. They were considered to be inferior to men. Research was conducted to nd biological differences that explain women"s inferiority. Women were regarded as overly emotional and unable to takeover cognitive tasks that required strong minds - only men were capable of such. The importance of difference: determines what is normative and what is not. Women are deviating from the normal male standard. Being a woman was considered being below the male standard - regardless of whether or not you were educated or had high ses. Women remained outsiders to the normative male standard. The woman"s brain: was regarded as smaller than the male brain. This thinking extended across race and culture: male > female > non-whites. The white male"s brain was considered superior to any other. Paul broca: involved in craniology - study of skulls and the brain.
