Lecture 17: substance use, addictive and impulse control disorders. Dsm categories: substance related and addictive disorders; disruptive, impulse control, and conduct disorders. Misuse: individuals can use drugs and alcohol without abuse, provided on not consuming in excess which is unfortunately a subjective concept. Individuals can abuse drugs without becoming addicted, individuals can be addicted without abuse (ie. cigarettes). Substance: a chemical compound that somebody that somebody may ingest to alter mood or behaviour. Use: moderate amounts of a drug with no impact on functioning. Abuse: significant impact on functioning (work, school, friendship, self-care) Dependence: physical (only need one to be considered a physical dependence: (1) tolerance: needs increasing amount of the drug for the same effect; (2) withdrawal: negative physiological response to lack of ingestion) or psychological dependence. Psychological dependence: repeated drug use, recurrence after abstinence, using against all odds, behavioural where they act like they are dependent.
