Methods of coping: how people cope over time, depending on situation etc. Coping is complex and dynamic b/c we are dealing with stress in the environment and stress is changing (chronic illnesses change) When coping we often call upon our personal resources to reduce stressful events. Ex: social support: interpersonal resources that can help you cope. Research based evidence to say it is important. Some people have good social support and others may not. Social support can take on different forms but generally involve a social network and a support system. Help with meals, driving you to the doctor, lending money. Appraisal support: helping somebody identify stresses and coping methods. All of these support types are not from a single person. Sometimes they are friends, government services, programs, organizations (ex: diabetes association) Emotional support: mostly in terms of listening and not actual advice. Theory that identify social support as a main effect of stress and a buffer/protection from stress.
