Lecture 7A: Sleep Deprivation
Women get more sleep than men.
A larger % of men get less that 6.5 hours.
Women are less likely to sacrifice sleep when under stress.

Core sleep which keeps you alive is the first 5 hours, mostly SWS sleep.
Optional sleep keeps you same, most REM and in the latter half of the night.
Following complete sleep deprivation:
i. On the first night, you typically on regain 30% of sleep loss (about 2.5 hours).
ii. Recover 100% of SWS loss, your body produces more of it out of necessity.
iii. Recover only 50% of REM loss.
Slow wave sleep is more important, losing it may shorten your lifespan.
If temperature is disturbed than REM is disturbed.
REM is important for emotional regulation, memory, and cognition.
Recent research has shown that optional sleep is more important for memory (so maybe not so optional).
Horne: Core vs. Optional Sleep
Core sleep: necessary and comes first.
- Homeostatic, restores body/brain functions.
- High % of SWS, some NREMS and REM.
Optional sleep: secondary to core sleep, more flexible.
- Secondary to core sleep, more flexible
- Follows environmental demands and behavioral drives as needed
- High % of REM
NREM2: originally thought to be filler sleep or non-restorative sleep.
Hore’s 1 Study: oluded fro a uer of laoratory studies that sleep deprivatio leads to sleep reovery,
concentrated in NREM4 (SWS) and REM. He therefor refers to these stages as core sleep, and other forms of SWS
to be optional.
- Oswald proposed that SWS functions restore the body to full waking capacity.
- Horne believed this could be achieved through periods of relaxed wakefulness.
Support:
- Sleep deprivation followed by only 30% recovery of lost sleep
- SWS deprivation followed by 100% recovery
- Short and long sleepers roughly need the same amount of SWS
- Lost REM sleep is not recovered
- Reducing sleep by a few hours has few overt consequences for most individuals in the short term
- Extended sleep will mostly add REMS and stage 2 sleep
Sleep Deprivation
Arousal: you may have micro sleeps or lapses in memory or consciousness, without realizing it is happening. In a
driving simulator experiment, people can fully respond and wake up when something in traffic happens.
- Full auditory and visual hallucinations with sleep deprivation.
Physical: aches and pains, increased hunger due to ghrelin, reduced feedback when satiated (leptin).
- Long term can be associated with increased BMI
