His ideas form the basis of symbolic interactionism: emphasis the interaction between people it takes place through symbols and the interpretation of meaning. Mead"s work also gives an account of the main phases of child development, particularly the emergence of the sense of self. Infants and children develop as social beings imitate those around them. Look at the way that children play they do what adults do. Mead called this, taking the role of the other . Through this play, they develop a sense of themselves as separate agents. Impression management (attempt to influence the perceptions of others, it"s a conscious or subconscious process) Routines by which individual actions are channeled by historical expectations . They are: recognizable, use symbols to produce a sense of belonging and solidarity amongst members of the group, they are mechanisms that hold society together.
