Durkheim"s way of saying when engaging with the topic with a theory can be checked only if it is to given account. Evidence has to be evaluated separated from our preconceptions. Things that are external to the individual and capable of exercising coercive power over him or her, independent of, and resistant to, the will of any given individual. They are normative by nature, what is expected from us. The opposite is considered pathological, contradictory to social norms. It is not from individuals but from society. Consider social facts around marriage, language, religion facts within these areas impact behaviour, expectations and norms in how you will be seen in terms of class, status etc. Material objects incorporated in the society: building, channels of communication, monuments, technological instruments(e. g. machines, etc. ).
