The study of material remains in order to describe and explain human behavior (haviland et al. , 2009:11) 3 types of material remains: environmental, remains of human activity, human remains themselves. Four goals of archaeology: reconstruct human past across time and space, reconstruct human lifeways, where & when, explain how and why the past occurred, interpretation of cognitive and symbolic behaviors of the past. Widening archaeological applications: more accurate dating, new dating techniques, (cid:498)new archaeology(cid:499, redefining archaeological aims, cultural resource management, protection of sites. Context is important (relationship between artifacts: primary (means you found the artifact in its original disposition) or secondary (artifact moved from its original placement) A categorization of artifacts to answer specific questions about a culture. Items that become associated with a site through natural processes (give environmental information) Its naturally occurring material that is found in the environment but it can also give you a lot of information.
