Blood is thicker than water fictional idea in the west. Things we think of as natural usually turn out to be cultural: complicated by fact that biology is constantly changing. Idea of nature and culture is quite unravelling. End of 19th century kinship core to anthropology since day one. Anthropologists are concerned with social evolutionary theory: all societies evolve from primitive to civilized societies. Different societies had different kinship structures: at most advanced society, very advanced kinship structure, at most primitive, very primitive kinship stricture, social evolution theory and kinship are related to each other. In 20th century anthropologists considered social evolution theory garbage: held onto idea of relation between kinship and relationships, looked at variation of kinship structures. Analyses driven by a number of assumptions: kinship varies between societies but built on the same biological facts.
