Document Summary
Semantics = study of meaning. linguistic structure, abstract. It is more of an american focus, but sociolinguistics are more of a british focus. Semantics, at one level, deals with words: referent = activity. It could also be a state of being or entity, something, a thing, imaginary, feeling: referential meaning versus grammatical meaning. Referential = all things/activities or entities (trees, walking, etc) refer to something; many words refer to entities. But there are also words that don"t refer to entities, such as prepositions (in, the, etc). Grammatical meaning = words that do not refer to entities: shifting referents = references that are reused continuously. Just like we and they - shifting thing: hyponym - larger semantic domain: variety of categories. blue green yellow red but even these terms have hyponyms within them. There are different types of red, for example (scarlet, red, etc) Hyponym = semantic domains are referred to different degrees of generalization.
