Tool use (the ability to shape our environment) There was an experiment to see if chimpanzee can speak language! It was tried on washoe, nim, chimpsky and kanzi. The experiment was to take a chimpanzee and put it in a human family and see if it could learn the language. In order to produce any human spoken language we have to have a right setup here. But chimpanzees and gorillas do not have the proper physical setup to speak language, like humans do. What distinguishes human language from any other language is the ability to productively combine a limited set of words into infinite sentences. When children are about the age of 9 months a lot of what they say is hollow phrases . Things like daddy up , or daddy go bye bye . An individual performs first step in a behavioral sequence, this is enough to elicit response from others.
