ANT203H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Allele Frequency, Punnett Square, Genotype Frequency
Document Summary
Population can be defined as a group of interbreeding individuals of the same species sharing a common geographical area. Gene pool is the sum of the alleles in a population at a particular time. Evolution is the change of allele frequencies over time in a population. An assumption usually made is that there is random mating among the individuals within a particular population. However, remember that in many cases, there is no random mating among individuals living in the same geographical area, due to: ethnic/religious isolation, linguistic/political isolation, other forms of isolation. In those cases, there is population subdivision, or in other words, population structure. We won"t review the consequences of population structure in this course, but you should know that this happens quite often in human populations. Four y alleles our of a total of ten : 4/10 = 0. 4 or 40%
