Document Summary

Lec 5: intrasexual competition: how males and females compete for mates. Ecology: males limited by access to females and females limited by access to resources, food determines not only the distribution of females but also their within and bw group relationships, food and its distribution matters. Very rare in animals, only 5% in mammals. High parental investment is absolutely required for this mating system. Concepts of monogamy are being revisited- social vs genetic monogamy, e. g. pair living, pair bonding (long term bonding bw sexual partners, same as pair living), monogamous species. One female breeding with multiple males, even rare than monogamy, happens when the cost is even higher for females, where they not only require assistance of just 1 male but multiple of them. As females map on to food resources, males map to females. Males typically much larger than females bc they"re fighting heavily with other males. Have multi males and females interbreeding in the same group.
