Document Summary
Penises are remarkably diverse: central for reproduction, shape and size of penis directly related to male fitness, successful sperm depos. Baculum (penis bone: most male mammals have a baculum, reduced in all apes but present, absent in humans. Dixson (2009: rated penile complexity by, length, distal complexity, size of baculum, penile spines. Shows some consistent differences b/w mating systems: using a 5 pt scale, each trait was rated for species representing 48 primate genera. Significantly longer and distally complex penises in dispersed polygynous and promiscuous groups. > polygyny & monogyny: suggested that in these groups more male-male competition and sperm competition, also had longer bacula. Showed correlation b/w penile morphology and mating systems. In species that retain baculum they are shorter in monogamous species: we"ve lost ours, lack of complexity in penis, our penises are towards monogamy on a 5 point scale, based on mating system.
