ANT334H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Long Bone, Iliac Crest, Histology
Document Summary
Changing that occur during growth and development. Age categories are more restricted than adult. The rate of skeletal maturation varies: environmental factors. Poor health = you won"t grow as well as a healthier child: genetic factors. There are differences in males and females as well: long bone growth is susceptible to environment. Always a margin of error with age estimate: always report age as a range. Techniques rely on: dental formation and eruption, long bone shaft lengths, appearance of ossification centres, union of epiphyses. Best method depends upon: stage of maturation, bones present, state of preservation. This is better because it is better insulated from environmental impact. Tooth mineralizes from crown to the root: more accurate than eruption, requires x-rays (unless you have tooth buds) Deciduous: begins prenatally, last 2-3 years. Emergence of tooth relative to alveolus, gum or occlusal plane. After root forms, fully erupted by the time root is complete.
