ANT365 – Lecture 10 Mahmood – ethical project, women, shuns individualism and a theory of subjectification Mattingly – first person view, deals in the ordinary and the individual/self Pandian – agrees with Mattingly regarding the cultivation of virtue, ordinary character of ethics and the focus on real people ^agrees with Mahmood on the hopes, aspirations and efforts of people ^unlike both he seeks to understand the historical context Caste and moral evaluation Moral evaluations applied to whole groups of people – most of this is a stereotype ^some people in the group come to see themselves through these stereotyped terms ^ Black Skin White Masks written by Franz Fanon – the colonized people of Martinique come to see themselves through the eyes of the French colonizers Caste is an elaborate system of moral evaluation ^comes from Spanish/Portuguese word meaning “race, lineage or breed” – casta ^castes are referred to as játi – meaning the category of related persons thought to be of the same physical and moral substance – have existed for many hundreds of years ^játi is typically associated with a particular job or trive Caste combined a classification of játi into four varna ^varna classifies people as Bahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras – commonly referred to as castes Criminal Tribes Act ^applied to group known as the thuggees in North India but eventually expanded to South India ^all men fingerprinted, required for regular roll call and were not allowed to leave their villages without written permission REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THEY HAD BEEN CONVICTED OF A CRIME Before colonialism, kallars had been the guards of villages ^1767 – 5000 Kallars were killed because they refused to pay tax Caste and Person Members of a caste are understood to share a moral substance ^determines what
