Central language ideology : accommodation to child and interpretation. Central language ideology: speaker responsible for clear communication. Central language ideology: children have lower status must adapt to situation. Languages change in part because of social pressures. Internal change: a change that is due to the way speakers of a language gradually modify their own language over time. External change: a change that occurs due to language contact and borrowing between speakers of different language. Often incorporated into sound system of borrowing language. Reanalysis: the process by which speakers analyze unfamiliar words into familiar looking components and assign familiar meanings to those components. Increasing use of 3rd person plural form as singular (cid:858)the(cid:455)(cid:859) (cid:448)ersus (cid:858)he/she(cid:859) Remember: these social meanings are arbitrary and can change. Change can result in a split into dialects. Languages and dialects flexible sets of practices, not fixed. Given enough time, can split into related languages. Not used as a first language (mother tongue)
