ANT312H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Ultrasonic Cleaning, Paleoethnobotany, Starch
Document Summary
Classification has been done by botanists: use taxonomy. Most general to most precise: kingdom, phylum (chordata), class (mammalia), order (carnivore), family(ursida), genus (ursus), species. Emic classification- is a tomato a fruit or vegetable. Scientific binomial name (in latin)- genus and species name (and name of scientists who described the taxon) Sometimes not sure which type so you add the letters sp. If not sure its wheat, you can go to bigger category- go to the family (grass family)- poaceae. Taxon- category to which we assign a specimen (plural-taxa) Macrobotanical remains (seeds, fruits, nuts, conifer needles) Pollen: grains that contain the male reproductive c ells of most plants. Starch: solid carbohydrate, occurring in form of minute granules found mainly in seeds and tubers. Phytoliths: microscopic structures made of silica found in some plant tissues. Form an imprint of the cell of the plant. Stone imprint can preserve for 1000s of years.
