Goals of chapter 1 Develop our perspective about astro Where are we? Be an active questioner How we learned earth is  a planet? Where is earth? Earth is member of the solar system Earth is not the centre of the solar system or universe It was believed that earth was centre from Greek astronomy 2200 years ago until 1500 Earth is insignificant How have we learned the correct view? Whats is the solar system? Solar system= the sun and all the objects that belong to the sun a large family Formed billions of years ago How do we know when it was formed? There are many other solar systems, far beyond How do we know We can't visit any other systems because they are too far How can we know what they are like? Members of the solar system Sun= heart of the solar system but it is just a star, like billions of others Planets, like earth, mars, jupiter… Dwarf planets, like pluto, eris natural satellite (moons) orbiting planets minor planets= asteroids, there are thousands comets, billions meteoroids= rocks made up of ice, dust how big is the solar system big does not have enough information don't memorize the numbers, will never ask just find out how we know and meaning understand what would be different if the number were different (mass of jupiter meaning  leads us to) how big is dart earths raiuds= 6,378 km diameter 12,756
