Document Summary

Is required in order for evolution to occur (natural selection works off of variations within populations) Heritable variation leads to differential survival and reproductive success. Variation in a population is not imperfection, but the material from which natural selection fashions better adapted forms of life. If a trait is heritable, but all individuals in a population are genetically identical for that trait, evolution (cid:272)a(cid:374)"t o(cid:272)(cid:272)u(cid:396) Natural sele(cid:272)tio(cid:374) does(cid:374)"t (cid:449)o(cid:396)k o(cid:374) (cid:272)lo(cid:374)es (cid:271)e(cid:272)ause the(cid:396)e is (cid:374)o (cid:448)a(cid:396)iatio(cid:374) a(cid:373)o(cid:374)g the i(cid:374)di(cid:448)iduals. Allele frequencies are not the same as genotype frequencies. Genetic variation refers to the number and relative frequency of alleles in a population. Population: a group of individuals of the same species, living in the same area, interbreeding, and producing fertile offspring. Individuals in a population must vary genetically for evolution to occur. A gene pool contains the variation that produces differing genotypes and phenotypes.
