Document Summary

Outline: scientific research: disseminating research results, primary research articles and other primary sources, primary, secondary, and tertiary sources, peer review, anecdotal evidence, evaluating what we read/hear. Primary source/article: comes first and contains original research: abstract (summary) Should accurately and succinctly summarize the findings of the research. Abstracts are often available to readers when they search electronic databases. When well-written, will generate interest in the research paper. Sections of an abstract: background (very brief), methods (brief and to the point), results (most important and longest part of abstract), conclusions. Provides readers with the background needed to understand the research. Note that the introduction is not a comprehensive literature review; only articles that are relevant to the research should be used. Summarizes the relevant literature, not the whole history of the field: materials and methods. Contains detailed information about the experimental design/experiments performed: results.
