This year was an early year for the return of the red-winged blackbirds to our campus (first record was the week before reading week). I believe that this occurred because we had a sudden warm period during the winter which likely triggered the return of the red-winged blackbirds. However, because this warm period was quickly replaced by colder weather, it was not good for them to return so quickly, since the weather got cold after reading week ended.
