Islands differ in size of black-tailed deer populations. Few hundred years ago, population was controlled by cougars, wolves, and by first nations. Plants that deer don"t like to eat are still intact. Bird abundance (individuals/ha) on islands with few or many deer. Table showing reciprocal relationship between understorey birds and deer abundance.
