The incorporation of each nucleotide into a polynucleotide chain costs the energy of two phosphate bonds. This condensation rxn results in a polynucleotide chain. However, the chemical polarity of dna molecule is 5" to 3". Native state of dna is double helix, where rna is not. In dna: they exist in an anti-parallel configuration (one chain starts at 5" and goes to 3", the other goes from 3" to 5"). If they weren"t anti-parallel, you wouldn"t have the double helical structure. Sugar phosphate backbone structure is on outer surface of both strands. Dna is a negatively charged molecule, due to the negative charge residing on phosphate-sugar backbone.
