If there is extra fat, gravity can push down certain structures. When breathing through your mouth, your mouth gets dry. Breathing through your nose allows the air to be filtered. Many cells have tiny cilia that trap harmful substances from entering the body. If you are a smoker, nicotine can paralyze the cilia: when they stop it might stop the function of mucus cells, they are reactivated at night so smokers become full of mucus in the morning. There are structures important for noise production. When you swallow, it shuts down your vocal cords. Part of the unique ability that humans have is the position of the hyoid and the control of the glottis. The cartilage ring in the trachea is a circle (full circle)
