Document Summary

We need nutrients and oxygen and we need to get rid of carbon dioxide. We have 2 pathways: one for food, one for air. Ingestion is the first step of digestion: occurs in oral cavity. Mechanical processing: the oral cavity breaks down the food. Digestion: talking about chemical and enzymatic breakdown. Absorption: we now absorb nutrients and water in the small and large intestine. Compaction: whatever your body doesn"t need is removed as feces. Mechanical processing: can work for any organ. Secretion: oral cavity, stomach, small intestine. Once the food is in the duodenum, signals with chemicals are sent here. Mechanical digestion is work through the accessory structures: teeth, tongue. Deglutition (swallowing: there are 2 stages. Buccal phase: compression of bolus against hard palate. Pharyngeal phase: epiglottis starts folding, upper respiratory system is closed off. The bolus is pushed to the stomach. We finally reach the esophageal sphincter which allows the food to enter the stomach.
