Somatic Reflexes
• Needed when conditions inside or outside
change rapidly and unexpectedly
– Removes or opposes the stimulus
• Preserves homeostasis by making rapid
adjustments
• Rapid and automatic responses to stimuli
• Little variability – produces the same
motor
response
Reflex Motor Patterns and Voluntary
Movements
• Spinal reflexes produce consistent
responses
• Same motor patterns can be activated by
centers
in the brain for voluntary movement
• Takes advantage of pre-existing motor
patterns
– i.e. walking, running, jumping
