Document Summary

Notes (endocrine system) textbook module (16. 1, 16. 3-16. 7) Ion, solute, lipid-soluble material exchange between adjacent cells via tight (gap) junction. Two cells that are able to exchange materials via their membrane. Neurotransmitter exchange in specific areas via synapses. Ex. could be action potential as ions crossing the boundary and initiating a generator potential in the adjacent cell from the neuron that has already gone through an action potential. Paracrine factors exchanged locally through ecf (extracellular fluid), target cells have specific receptors. Ex. could be attributed to chondrocytes, fibroblasts they govern how fast or slow they function. Could be transferred to any location in the body. The factors produced by the cell act on the receptors of the cell (so affecting itself) Limited to cell that secretes the chemical signal. Hormone exchange between distant tissues and organs via bloodstream. Hormones are delivered via blood to target tissues. Requires a synapse (synaptic cleft) which makes it longer.
