Document Summary

Lecture 2a and 2b the integumentary system & more than skin. We have such a huge connection with our skin but it is the least studied organ (why is it important to you?) Epidermis (firm covering) and dermis (looser tissue) make up your skin (the integument) Reticular layer has a base of accessory structures of the skin (ex. exocrine glands, hair, etc. ) Structures in the skin: exocrine glands, blood vessels, nerve endings, hair, muscle (by the hair follicle) Functions of the skin: protection, excretion (glands), thermoregulation (blood vessels), production of melanin and keratin (melanin also gives you protection of all other skin cells), synthesis of vitamin d3, storage of lipids, sensory reception. Yes, the skin is an organ (two types of tissues combined) The top is epidermis (more firm and less prone) Epidermis has many strata or layer names come from their function. Stratum corneum: where things that are shedding is, most firm, dead cells (larger in thick skin)
