Document Summary

If only sodium channels were moving through the membrane and potassium channel and sodium potassium pump were inactive, the membrane potential inside the cell would become more positive. We have chemically gated channels but they"re not active yet in the resting membrane (still at -70) The axon terminals are activated, bringing the signal. When the key is released as a result of electrical impulse, it will unlock the chemically gated channels. Brings the inside of the cell to about -60mv. Depolarization affects the channels downstream from it (towards the initial segment) they are getting activated and depolarized as well. The signal is now travelling towards the initial segment where things are drastically different. The channels at the initial segment are voltage gated channels. Action potential is generated at the initial segment not the axon hillock. The key is simply when we reach a certain electrical potential.
