Bio320 lecture two information: filtering and transduction. A species or individual"s umwelt or self world. How an individual interprets its surrounding, different individual in the same surroundings can have different umwelt ex. Umwelts is shaped by what sensory system the individual has available to it and kinds of windows on the world give that organism. Windows to the world also has a frame acts as a filter. Each of these form a component of the organisms umwelt and when put together it creates a whole. Organism is the sum of its parts. Attention, salience, difference between sensation and perception -> covered by umwelts. What an individual"s umwelt is built from depends on what attracts and demands their information what is salient to them ex bees are attracted to flower not rocks. Individuals umwelt differs from individual to individual, depending on what motivates them ex. Integratively? sensation: sound & vision; smell & taste, sound and vision- both important for orientation, spatial.
