Document Summary

Stress & elasticity: hooke"s law, young"s modulus, materials, composites, and toughness. The science of elasticity is about the interactions between forces & deflections in materials & structures . The science of elasticity seeks to understand the mechanical behaviour of structures when they are loaded. Ennos part 2: materials: elastomers: resilin (flea), abduction (scallop), elastin (deer ligament, complex polymers: mesoglea (jellyfish), mucus (snail), silks (spiders, insects, polymer composites: keratin (hair, nails), cuticle (insects), wood (trees, composites incorporating ceramics: sponges, bone, teeth, mollusc shells. Scale of elasticity: every material sits somewhere on a scale between stiffness & compliance, the concept of the elastic conditions at a specified point inside a material is the concept of stress. January 14, 2019 portion of the stress/strain curve graph/ratio of stress to strain will be constant. Tensile test= uniform piece of material is stretched, giving values for a stress-strain plot. Elastic storage capability is the area under the straight part of the plot.
