Document Summary

Bacteria: not compartmentalized so transcription and translation can occur anywhere, can also occur together, whole virus enters. Animal: certain part to preform transc and transl, virus enters via phagocytosis and pinocytosis- but still vary with the virus. Most enter via receptor mediated endocytosis: virions attach to coated pits (specialized membrane region, pits pinch and fuse with lysosomes, endosomal acidity (+ maybe lysosomal enzymes triggers uncoating process. Some viruses undergo major changes in capsid structure and only nucleic acids enter cytoplasm. Cytocidal infection: when the virus harms the host: can damage lysosomes, alter plasma membrane, disrupt cell structure etc. Persistent infection: cell doesn"t die and is released slowly: acute infections last for short periods and do not always cause cell lysis, chronic infections are detectable whether symptoms are present or not. Latent infection: there is dormancy period where no symtpms are detected than you can have either lytic or persistent infection. Transformation into turomourgenic states: some oncogenes are linked to viruses.
