Note: the first 4 to 6 pairs of mesonephric tubules arise as outgrowths from the primary nephric ducts. Farther caudally, mesonephric tubules, up to a total of 36 to 40, take shape separately in the intermediate mesoderm slightly behind the caudal extension of the mesonephric ducts. This functions to filter and remove body wastes only as there is little need to conserve water. The mesonephros does not develop a medullary region for concentrating urine, as the adult human kidney must.
