BIO380H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Pronucleus, Cholesterol, Hyaluronidase
Document Summary
The oocyte will be ovulated with the zona pellucida and corona radiata (2-3 cumulus cells) intact. The second meiosis does not continue until metaphase ii is over. The function of the polar body is to reduce the genetic information of the oocyte and to increase its cytoplasm (unequal division); preserve the cytoplasm. If one of the uterine tubes are disconnected or blocked, the oocyte goes through the other uterine tube because the tubes are really close to each other; the ovaries alternate with providing the one mature follicle. The oocyte will be ovulated and picked up by the fimbriae. Fertilization occurs at the ampulla region of the uterine tube. Progesterone always assumes that the egg has been fertilized; the egg is grabbed by the cilia and via muscle contractions and the tubal fluid is pushed towards the uterus. As the fertilized ovum is moved towards the uterus, it engages in mitosis.
