BIO202H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Aquatic Animal, Terrestrial Animal, Allometry
Document Summary
Figure 1. 2: physiology is a central discipline in biology. Basically, this figure is telling us that many factors affect adult phenotype including development, environment, random processes natural selection, reproduction, evolution and genotype. Adult phenotype consists of the different levels of biological organization (molecules, cells tissues ) that forms physiology, morphology and behaviour. Aquatic environment challenges: wet all the time, less light, more dense, more viscous. Though this means that they have more body support: harder to extract oxygen, abundant suspended nutrients. Terrestrial challenges: dry all the time, more light, less dense, less viscous. This means that they have no body support: easier to extract oxygen, no suspended nutrients. What is a challenge due to scaling that an aquatic animal like a seal experience: obtaining enough oxygen. What about a terrestrial animal like the pujila darwani: cooling down in warm temperatures. List the levels of biological organization in order: atoms molecules cells tissues organs organ systems populations communities ecosystems biosphere.
