Tutorial 1 Sunday, 12 January, 2014 9:58 PM Today's Topics: Announcements: Homework:  Lab session format  TA: Andrew Chan Read pgs 1-30 of lab manual ○ [email protected] Experiment 1 Prelab  Lab reports  Experiment 1  PRA113Section 12  Redox reactions Lecture Topic: Labs  Will start at 2:10sharp  All lab sessions will begin with a short 10-15minute intro to lab and safety  A portion of the mark will depend on time management - points will be: ○ Given for finishing early ○ Given for good use of downtime ○ Taken for finishing late (a lab should only take 2-2.5 hours) Lab reports  New format with the following sections: 1. Introduction/Purpose  3-4 sentences, max. 1/2 page  What are you trying to find out in the lab?  How is this done (what techniques are used)?  Relate topic to real world application 2. Method  2 sentences  Refer to lab manual and list the specific pages  List 2 derivations from the given method  Show amounts and concentrationsof reagents 3. Results/Calculations  Summarize results (don't include raw data)  Show example calculations only 4. Discussion  1 page  Give 3 concepts from lectures/tutorialsthat apply to the lab  Were the concepts verified? 5. Conclusion  State the goal of the experiment and whether it was achieved  List 1 possible source of error (see Appendix A - either instrument or method error)  Give 1 suggestion to either improve the lab or for a possible further experiment 6. References  One reference is the lab manual with relevant page numbers  The other reference must be a textbookwhich is not the course textbook  The lab may be double-sided but the title page must be its own sheet  Feedback sheets should be stapled to the front  Tips: ○ Do all calculations first ○ Spread the work out - do one section a day Experiment 1 concerns the reaction BrO + NH OH 3 Br + N3 - - ?  The goal: to find out what the compound N? is  How? ○ Because Br is reduced in the above equation, N is oxidized - to find N? we find its final oxidation state  Reactions: - - - - 1.
