Document Summary

Mass spectrometry is used to conirm or idenify chemical species. The instrument used in this technique is known as a mass spectrometer. It ionizes gaseous molecules through collisions with electrons, separate the ions produced and record the relaive number of them. A plot of relaive abundance verse mass/ charge raio (m/q) is known as a mass spectrum. The purpose of this lab is to use the available mass spectrum data given to idenify an organic chemical compound through series of analysis. Table: analysis of valuable points of peaks of the unknown. amu of peak. Since we knew the unknown compound we are working with is a simple organic compound, elements: carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitorgen, luorine, sulpher, chlorine or bromine could be a component. We can also see the m-85 peak has an amu of 19, which is the molecular mass of f and this could indicate the presence of f atom.
