CHM110H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Acetic Anhydride, Ester, Sodium Hydroxide
Document Summary
When an organic acid is heated with an alcohol in the presence of a strong mineral acid, ester is produced. Acetylsalicylic acid (asa) or aspirin is an ester of salicylic acid. Aspirin that is not kept dry can decompose over ime, which produces salicyclic acid and aceic acid with the presence of an odour like vinegar. The purpose of experiment 5&6 is to synthesize aspirin through esteriicaion of salicylic acid and aceic anhydride, Acetic acid and to analyze aspirin by acid-base itraion involving the method of back-itraion. In this technique for this lab, excess of naoh will be added to the neutralized soluion to allow hydrolysis, and then the amount of excess itrant is determined by itraion with hcl. By knowing the number of moles of naoh added, we can calculate the number of moles of analyte present in the original soluion. Total moles of acid in the soluion: (0. 10002m) (0. 01798l) = 0. 00180mol.
