CHM231H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Iodine Trichloride, Interhalogen, Kelo-Tv
Document Summary
After the synthesis took place, a uv-vis spectrometer was used to monitor the decomposition reaction of iodine trichloride with water. The absorption of the solution was measured between 300nm and 700nm, and the difference in absorption overtime was recorded. 1 the synthesis and decomposition reactions can be summarized by the two equations in the prelab question section of this report. The purpose of this lab was to learn how highly reactive and unstable interhalogens act. In the case of the lab, the interhalogen which was studied was iodine trichlroride (icl3). The synthesis equation: kclo3 (aq) + i2 (s) + 6hcl (aq) 2icl3 (aq) + 3h2o (l) + kcl (aq) The decomposition equation: (icl3)2 (s) 2icl (aq) + 2cl2 (g) (in air) 2icl3 (s) + 3h2o(l) icl(s) + hio3 (aq) + 5hcl (aq) (in water) Safety hazards: no skin contact, eye contact, ingestion or inhalation. In case of eye or skin contact, immediately flush eyes with warm water for fifteen minutes.
