CIN306H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Agnosticism
Document Summary
This movie is mainly absurd: as the title suggests, horses don"t have feathers. Huxley on agnosticism: not a creed but a method, follow reason as far as it takes you, without regard to any other consideration, do not pretend that conclusions are certain. Whatever it is, i"m against it : the joke is in that it is a rigorous application of a single principle against all principles; my only principle is that i"m agains principle. The film makes a distinction between animals and humans under the banner of absurdity. We are in a play mode rather than a serious mode, disengaged from conceptual and practical concern. All ravens are black is logically equivalent to all non-black objects are nonravens. Since the statement are equivalent, any observation that confirms one confirms the other. It brings them into a relation of identity with the statement all ravens are black but doesn"t include any specificity of the objects themselves.
