Note: there are also biological phenomenon that do not classify into one of these groups mentioned. "the state of being male or female as expressed by social or cultural distinctions and differences, rather than biological ones: the collective attributes of traits associated with a particular sex, or determined as a result of ones sex. " Note: in todays world, we know there are more than two genders. Between the time of 1955 and 1965 in ontario, men would be educated, work and make money for the entire household. Women would often do the same, but once married, would resort to staying home and taking care of children, and cleaning among other chores. This is an example of some characteristics of gender roles.
