Chapter 3 covers a lot of ground. Look at feature of designs and the problems. You focus on one thing you want to explore and describe it. Focus on a particular event, situation, or person. You are limited based on complex circumstances that may vary. Sometimes there is no time and money to study in a large way. One thing happening and you are trying something. It seeks to see if that one thing will affect the experiment. Random assignment (eliminates bias - equal opportunity to be selected) Being in a lab can affect the results of the experiment. Example: treatment group gets reminders to get in touch with someone who they have not contacted in 60 days. Difference between u. s. and japan could be the cultural differences. It is not the experimenter that assigns people to groups. It is something natural that assigns people to groups. Mothers of male children versus female children.
