Chapter 2: making new media make sense. in personal connections in the digital. In common sense, or journalistic discourses, media are represented in different ways. Some of the most common ones though are clearly evident, such as the attachment of values to media technology. A technology is neutral and its effects depend on what people do with it; a technology brings with it destruction of the social order; a technology brings with it global democracy and better social relationships. This discourses have been present for all new media technologies. In the 18th century, the emergence of the telegraph was described in france as the tool that would bring direct municipal democracy to the country. In the 17th century the novel, whose public was composed by women, would separate them for the real world to immerse them in a dreamy world that would make them forget about their social role.
