In order to be a full citizen of the u. s. , 5 conditions had to be fulfilled (as per thomas whitney): remoteness from parent government, aristocratic discourse. Interest in community based mutual protection: wild and romantic habits of life and, reliance on divine providence and an innate resistance to despotic authority which is inherited from puritan ancestors.
