ENG364Y5 Lecture : Tennessee Williams - “A Streetcar Named Desire”
Document Summary
Stanley is such a strong character anger. Williams captures the human when stripped naked. Stanley raping blanche tears her mask off and sends her into insanity. Modern and complex, but not far from us. Characters hiding from their backgrounds and their pasts. Can destroy us if we are not careful. Blanche wants and needs to be the southern belle. Blanche marries young and discovers her husband is gay. He kills himself in the middle of the dancefloor. Stella is more sensitive, not as hyper aware as blanche. Blanche can"t tell the difference between reality and fantasy. Forces blanche to see the uncomfortable truth. Blanche clings to a past that doesn"t exist. Doesn"t belong in new orleans with stanley. Her name entitles her to something stanley does not have. Stanley is more vicious and primitive, primal. Will survive better than old southern belle. Cost of denial of not seeing who we are. Thinks she deserves more than the gutter.
